“Breaking Good”

“Breaking Bad”. This television series is a master class in truly bad behavior that started out with good intentions.  To ” Break Bad” is a southern regional expression meaning to “raise hell, get into serious trouble, defy social norms”.

How about as a society that we set out, with intention, to “Break Good”.   I am fascinated by the word Break.  I love how it creates so many images and emotions when linked with other words.  Breaking down, breaking up.  Breaking free, breaking through.  Breaking waves, breaking wind. Breaking bread, breaking rules.

To break means to be shattered, broken, while to Take a Break means to pause, rest, be re-charged.

I’m fond of saying “Take a Break, Before You Break”.  It can be hard to do but it is essential to recognize when you are heading for a Thelma and Louise moment to stop the car before you go off the cliff.  Often we feel guilty about needing to take a break as if by recognizing our own limitations we are somehow weak or less capable than others.  Nothing could be further than the truth.

Is your iPhone selfish?

Consider your array of devices – do you begrudge the need to recharge the battery on your precious cell phone?  Do you think less of your vehicle when you need to fill the gas tank?  When your body is telling you to take a break, listen.  My wise mother told me that recognizing these signals and responding to them is your own natural safety valve.  If you are tired – find a way to take a rest.  If you are stressed, find a way to get support.  You simply cannot run on empty – at least not for very long.

Find your strength

I believe it is a sign of strength and courage to be able to recognize when you need to take a break and to figure out the best way to do that for yourself.  Everyone is different and what is refreshing for some is exhausting for others.  Consider your options and then take  care of yourself, no excuses.  You just can’t pour from an empty cup

Think about the idea of Breaking Good.  Meaning “raise heaven, consciously take good care of yourself, while you care for others and in the process defy social norms”.  It’s not a new idea but one we need more than ever right now.

    1. Thanks, Beth. Sometimes we get lost in trying to be all things to all people and we end up feeling nothing at the end of the day. We have to let go of the guilt of self-care and realize that it is essential for our survival. B.
