Fashion on Wheels – Who knew that a wheelchair could be a fashion accessory?

One of the many challenges in caring for an elderly parent is simply getting around.  Whether it’s running errands or visiting special places like museums or attractions.  When the ability to walk is diminished so too is the opportunity to enjoy the world.  However, suggesting the use of a wheelchair for the first time can be a sticky situation.  Many people feel that using a wheelchair means they are diminished, or will be seen as an invalid.  It can be a blow to their sense of self, their personal dignity.

Her walker with the built-in seat just wasn’t enough.  I decided the time had arrived to purchase a wheelchair.  I needed to find one that I could lift, fold up, put in my trunk and most importantly – that my mom would be willing to use.

looking.  Then I hit the jackpot!  I found a snazzy plaid wheelchair that looked not unlike a Burberry Plaid (my mom’s favorite).  She loved it.  I even found a handbag that sort of matched.  Who knew that a wheelchair could be a fashion statement.  Whenever we went out people would stop and comment on her lovely plaid wheelchair.  Mom was delighted and I got my shopping done.
